Several larger cockroach species may be found in and around Sydney properties. Unlike German cockroaches, these species often live outdoors, in drains or within structural areas before entering indoor spaces while searching for food, water and shelter.

American Cockroaches
American cockroaches are large, reddish-brown cockroaches that can grow to approximately 35–40 mm long. They have a pale yellow border behind the head and may fly short distances in warm conditions.
They are commonly found around drains, sewers, grease traps, rubbish areas, subfloors, roof voids and wall cavities.
Australian Cockroaches
Australian cockroaches are dark brown and approximately 35 mm long. They have noticeable yellow markings behind the head and along the outer edges of their wings.
They usually live outdoors around gardens, shrubs, trees, leaf litter, mulch, woodpiles and beneath bark. They may enter homes and shelter in subfloors, wall cavities and roof voids.
Smokybrown Cockroaches
Smokybrown cockroaches are shiny, dark brown to almost black and grow to approximately 30 mm long. They have fully developed wings and may fly short distances, particularly during warm weather.
They prefer dark, damp and poorly ventilated areas such as drains, roof voids, wall cavities, subfloors, sheds, grease traps and heavily mulched gardens. They can also be attracted to lights at night.
Oriental Cockroaches
Oriental cockroaches are usually dark brown or black and grow to approximately 20–25 mm long. They generally do not fly and tend to move more slowly than other pest cockroaches.
They prefer cool, damp locations and are commonly found around drainage systems, plumbing, subfloors, leaf litter and other areas containing decaying organic matter.
