What carpet beetles look like

Adult carpet beetles are small, oval-shaped insects. Depending on the species, they may be dark or have a mottled pattern of cream, brown and black. Their larvae look quite different: they are brown, hairy and elongated. It is the larvae that cause damage to fabrics.

Signs of carpet beetles

You may notice small, irregular holes in wool clothing, rugs or upholstery. Other signs include hairy larvae or their shed skins near skirting boards, under furniture, inside wardrobes or among stored fabrics. Adult beetles may also appear near windows.

Where carpet beetles hide

Larvae favour quiet areas where natural fibres, lint, pet hair or other suitable food sources collect. Common places include beneath furniture, along carpet edges, inside wardrobes, under rugs and in stored clothing or blankets.

What attracts carpet beetles?
